One of the most important things I want to leave you with is this quote below that helps drive the point of why you should be using the 4 pillars of SEO and by the time that you get done reading this post I hope that you’ll use the four pillars of SEO to strengthen your holistic SEO strategy.

Before we get too far into this post, I’d like to provide you with a cursory lesson in What is SEO? If you want more in-depth information on learning SEO please read one of my three posts listed below (under key benefits of SEO include).
What is SEO?
“SEO, or otherwise known as Search Engine Optimization, is the art and science of driving organic, or unpaid, traffic to your website through search engines.
It involves making changes to your website to make it more attractive for search engines to reward you with higher rankings based on the quality and relevance of content, among other things.
For example, creating and optimizing high-quality content on your website to include specific keywords that are relevant to what users are searching for, is one of many factors Google uses to rank your website.
The tricky part is understanding what else you actually need to do. Google relies on hundreds of variables to score and rank your website. So, it’s not quite as simple as whacking together a few blog articles or changing some headings on your website.
The good news is that SEO includes hundreds of tactics you can use to help you increase your search rankings. These tactics can be categorized as the four core pillars of SEO.”

To borrow a phrase from an old Star Wars, what seems like a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… I wrote a post called 20+ Search Engine Optimization FAQs and I want to direct your attention to item #17 which was a question: “What are the three types of SEO? The three kinds of SEO are:
a. On-page SEO – Anything on your web pages – Blogs, product copy, web copy.
b. Off-page SEO – Anything which happens away from your website that helps with your SEO Strategy- Backlinks.
c. Technical SEO – Anything technical undertaken to improve Search Rankings – site indexing to help bot crawling.”
What are the 4 pillars of SEO?
When I wrote this post in October of 2021, I missed one very important type of pillar SEO which was inadvertently omitted called Content SEO.
The four pillars of SEO include technical SEO, content SEO, on-site optimization SEO (or on-page SEO), and off-site SEO (or referred to as off-page SEO).
If you do a Google search for what are the four pillars of SEO you’re likely to see different pillars than the one’s I’ve provided which are the most prevalent pillars mentioned. So I’d stick with these as the four pillars of SEO.

So, I’m taking a step back to address what are the four pillars of SEO and using the description that I had prior in addition to the new material which I’ve found.
First off, I’m going to arrange these in the same order as the picture.
1. Technical SEO – Anything technical undertaken to improve Search Rankings – site indexing to help bot crawling. Optimizing the architecture and performance of a website.
2. On-page SEO – Anything on your web pages – Blogs, product copy, web copy. Optimizing website content for search engines and users (i.e., using Rank Math to optimize your posts and improve your scores).
3. Off-page SEO – Anything which happens away from your website that helps with your SEO Strategy. Set of actions performed outside of a website to improve search ranking position (backlinks for example). This post is helping to improve my off-page SEO and Content SEO as I create new keywords and incorporate them into my blog with new posts. And the keyword for this post “What are the four pillars of SEO?” has been created by design to build more keywords and increase search traffic.

4. Content SEO – Creating content following search engine optimization best practices.
So now let’s briefly discuss the “techniques” that can be included for each of the four pillars just mentioned:

Technical SEO techniques can include:
- Improving site speed
- Optimizing images
- Cleaning up codes and scripts
- Implementing newer technologies
- Making sure your website is mobile-friendly
- The structure of your website, how easy it is to navigate
- Improving the structure of data and how it’s perceived by search engines
- Web core vitals: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), First Input Delay (FID), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS).
For the On-Page SEO I’m providing some new pins (at the bottom of this post) that I hope you’ll share that are very helpful to optimize your SEO posts, especially if you’re using the Rank Math SEO plug-in. (I’m providing the table because the info in the pin is a little hard to read, and it’s easier to read in the table’s that I’ve provided).
On-page SEO strategies can include:
- Keyword research and optimization
- Matching content to relevant types of search intent (what people are searching)
- Avoid repeating too much of the same keywords (keyword stuffing)
- Enrich your content with semantically related phrases
- Write content for humans not for search engine crawlers
- Including keywords in titles and headings
- Making sure content is simple and easy to read
- Making sure all meta descriptions and title tags are enticing
- Create short and descriptive URLs
Rank Math SEO Plug-in. I found this useful tidbit on a post that looks at what is the Best SEO Plugin for WordPress — Yoast, Rank Math, or All in One SEO.
I don’t agree with their bottom line that said: “Ultimately, it’s you who chooses the winner. The best WordPress plugin depends on what you value most.” But I think that the reason that I’ve been able to appreciate Rank Math SEO is stated in the last sentence (that I placed in bold font so it’s easier for you to see).
“Rank Math is really shaking things up. It offers the most advanced features of the three plugins. Many of them at no additional cost. If you’re shopping based on price, this plugin gives you the most for free!
The Pro and Business versions of the plugin are exceptionally innovative with great new features such as the integration of Google Search Console and Google Analytics data. Having this SEO performance data right in your WordPress dashboard can be a game-changer. After all, you can’t improve what you don’t measure.
The only downside when it comes to Rank Math is its number of features. If you’re relatively new to WordPress SEO, you may not know whether or not a certain feature matters. This plugin is most helpful to WordPress users with more advanced SEO knowledge and skills.”
For that reason new bloggers might want to get started with Yoast SEO to learn the preliminaries of Search Engine Optimization and then maybe after 3 or 4 months migrate to Rank Math SEO which will really give your SEO a significant boost if you follow it’s recommendations (that can be time consuming if you try to incorporate all of the suggestions).
“This SEO pillar can be best described as a trust-building exercise done outside of the website to help improve rankings. It involves building a website’s reputation and authority by including links from other high-quality sites, managing local citations, among other things.
Off-page SEO strategies can include:
- Link building, getting links from reputable websites with high authority
- Building and managing local citations
- Optimizing and managing your Google My Business
- Earning more positive reviews”
Content SEO Planning
“Google will reward you with higher rankings if your content is highly relevant to what users are searching for.
Content strategies can include:
- Using keyword research tools and exploring keyword ideas
- Writing on an in-depth topic
- Matching content to relevant types of search intent (what people are searching)
- Including long-tail keywords”
“There are five factors to keep in mind as it relates to content and SEO:
- Quality – Unique, well-written content that provides visitors with great value is a must.
- Keywords – Content needs to include the phrases you want to gain exposure for in the search results. Cluster related keywords together and use synonyms to provide greater context.
- Recency – Fresh, new content is popular with search engines. Often, the most frequently updated content on a website is your blog.
- Type – Depending on the topic of the page, you will want to integrate a meaningful combination of text, images, video and more to ensure the page is dynamic, visually appealing, and engaging.
- Relevancy – How well the content on your website matches to search queries is content relevancy. The more relevant, the more likely your web page will perform well in the search results.”

The other thing to notice (in the graphic above) is the words rework content on the far-left hand side so that you’re continually reworking and updating your content.
Getting Started with SEO
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Another post I wrote quite a while ago was called How to select your niche from Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. In that particular post, “How to select your niche from Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs” Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs are the basic needs that all people have. They are arranged in order from Physiological to Self Actualization.
The needs to be arranged in primarily in that order. The more basic needs are placed at the bottom of the pyramid. The point of this is that if you want to make money for your blog you need to find a way to meet people’s needs. You can do this by looking at Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
When I wrote that post I didn’t have this similar structure to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs which is a pyramid of getting started with SEO.
Much like Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs pyramid, the further up you go the better. And your ultimate goal as a blogger is to reach the stage of advanced SEO comprised of schema markup, content structured as snippet bait & more (I’m close to the apex of the pyramid and once my site starts getting monetized, I can truly say that I’ve reached the level of authority and trust (demonstrated by links and social shares to show that your content is expert).
“SEO doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Instead, break it down into its component parts. And, you don’t have to be an expert at SEO to get found in Google. All you need is a process.
A good process to follow is the pyramid below.
Looking at the pyramid above these are the levels for getting started with SEO with the highest one being at the top of the pyramid (advanced SEO).
- Advanced SEO – schema markup, content structured as snippet bait & more
- Authority & Trust – links & social shares to show that your content is expert.
- On-Site SEO – keyword optimized content to add context to your content.
- Excellent User-Experience – a fast, easy to use, and compelling experience. (i.e. WP Rocket).
- Outstanding Content – to share your expertise with the world and lastly
- Solid Technical SEO – Ensure that the search engines can crawl and index your content.
