I’m writing this post, “How to create a link” as a recommendation from CanIRank to improve my site’s Website Authority at PinArtwork. The main focus for this post is to understand what makes a good link and that by the conclusion of the post you should know how to write a good link and you’ll know how to get good “natural” backlinks. Throughout the post you’ll be provided with several blogging tips for backlinks building and several examples of internal links that are set up the right way.

PinArtwork – Learn to start your blog! Improving the world by helping Pinterest users to start a blog, grow their blog, monetize it, improve their SEO strategy, and providing general information for Pinterest.
For your primary keyword to stand out and get more attention from Google, have it in bold face and italicized.
Before I get started there are a few things to know first about backlinks:
- Backlinks are the basic foundation of SEO
- They’re a sign of what your blog has to offer, and they signify to Google the importance of what’s on your website.
- To improve your SEO rankings and improve your Domain Authority (DA) score it’s necessary to get quality relevant links from the following:
- Trusted / authoritative pages
- Pages with your target keywords

FAQs about link building
What is link building?
“In the field of search engine optimization, link building describes actions aimed at increasing the number and quality of inbound links to a webpage with the goal of increasing the search engine rankings of that page or website.” – Wikipedia
“Link building is the process of getting other websites to link to pages on your own website. The purpose of link building is to boost the “authority” of your pages in the eyes of Google, so that these pages rank higher and bring more search traffic.
In general, you can boil most “white hat” link-building strategies down to two simple steps:
- Create something notable (and therefore worthy of a link)
- Show it to people who own websites (and thus can link to it)” – The Beginner’s Guide to Link Building
Here’s some simple link-building tips for how to build links:
Provide a compelling reason
“Reach out to the owner of the website you want a link from and give them a compelling reason to link to you.
That “compelling reason” is absolutely essential for this group of link-building tactics. The people you reach out to don’t care about you and your website (unless you’re some sort of celebrity) and thus they have zero incentive to help you out. So before you ask them to link to you, ask yourself: ‘What’s in it for THEM?‘
Here are some of the link-building tactics and strategies that fall into this category, along with a briefly defined “compelling reason” that they’re based off
- Guest blogging. Create useful content for their website.
- Skyscraper technique. Show them a better resource than the one they’re linking to.
- Link inserts. Show them a resource with more information on something they’ve briefly mentioned.
- Ego bait. Mention them or their work in your own content in a positive light.
- Testimonials & Case studies. Give positive feedback about their product or service.
- Link exchanges. Offer to link back to them if they agree to link to you.
- Resource page link building. Show them a good resource that fits their existing list.
- Broken link building. Help them fix a “dead” link on their page.
- Image link building. Ask to get credit for using your image.
- Unlinked mentions. Ask to make the mention of your brand “clickable.”
- Link moves. Ask to make changes to an existing link.
- HARO & journalist requests. Give an “expert quote” for their article.
- PR. Give them a killer story to cover.
The aforementioned compelling reasons are from The Beginner’s Guide to Link Building from Ahrefs.
Many of these suggestions are very good; however, the reality is that many of the website masters unless you’re pretty famous may not provide you with the link because their interests lie within their blog. The techniques above are best used for if you have exceptional content where people want to naturally provide a link to that page.
An example of a contextual link with awesome content!

It’s got awesome art by Star Trek artist Michael Schuh and many other Star Trek pins that features at least one pin from every Star Trek TOS episode.
Below is the Idea pin that I’m referring to that’s actually on my Pinterest board. Since to the best of my knowledge you can’t put a Pinterest Idea pin in a blog post, I’ve included a picture of the Pinterest Idea pin and a link to my Pinterest account – PinArtwork Blogger where you can easily see the Pinterest Idea pin right at the front of all the pins.

What does it mean to build a link?
“Link building, simply put, is the process of getting other websites to link back to your website. … Building links is one of the many tactics used in search engine optimization (SEO) because links are a signal to Google that your site is a quality resource worthy of citation.”
How do links to your site help you?
Here’s the quick answer to this question: “Links (both from other websites as well as the links within your own site) are important to SEO ( and help you) because there is a direct correlation between quality/quantity of links to your site and how much search traffic your site receives. – “Why Are Links Important for SEO” from ContentHarmony
Read what Ahrefs has to say about why you should use links: “Links are the currency of the web. The websites that have plenty of them are deemed “authoritative” and are rewarded with high rankings in Google. While websites that don’t have any are bound to obscurity.
If you’re just starting out in SEO, figuring out link building can be quite a challenge.
Some SEOs will tell you to create great content and wait for links to come naturally, others will insist that strategic link prospecting and targeted email outreach is where it’s at.” The Beginner’s Guide to Link Building
Why is link building important?
“Keep in mind that backlinks are important to your page’s rank or position in SERPs.” – Neil Patel
“Links are one of the three major ranking factors in Google. So if you want your website’s pages to rank high in search, you will almost certainly need links.
Google (and other search engines) look at links from other sites as “votes.” These votes help them identify which page on a given topic (out of thousands of similar ones) deserves to be ranking at the very top of the search results.” – The Beginner’s Guide to Link Building
“Nobody knows for sure how exactly Google measures the value of each link. But there are some general concepts of evaluating links that the SEO community believes to be true.
If you’re a blogger the best place to put a link it in the front and center of your blog so that it reaches a lot of people that can see it and users can click on it. – The Anatomy of a Link – What Makes a Good (and Bad) Link?
The graphic below for components of Google’s Ranking Algorithm surveyed (by Moz) 72 SEO’s to determine search ranking factors. By not using link building as part of your SEO strategy you could be missing out of 15% of the pie which is a considerable amount of traffic no doubt.

What makes a good link?
“It’s not possible to give a single, all-encompassing definition of a good link, because there are several factors to consider. In the same vein, a bad link isn’t just a link from a low-quality or banned web page — there’s more to it.
However, a good general principle to keep in mind is that the harder it is to get a backlink, the more value it will likely have. That’s because good links aren’t easy to get.” – How to determine if a link is good or bad by Neil Patel
Should I make all of my links dofollow so that they’ll increase and improve my search rankings? The answer is emphatically No!
“You … need some nofollow links in order to make the links look natural, authoritative and relevant.” – Ibid
Does the location of a link on a page affect the SEO value of it?
Yes, “For example, site-wide links — e.g., those in footers or sidebars — don’t carry much weight. But links inside the content (i.e., contextual links) are the best you can ever get.” – How to determine if a link is good or bad by Neil Patel
“Google perceives contextual links from relevant sites as significantly valuable, and will reward you accordingly.” – Ibid
“To be safe, aim for contextual links — i.e., links from within the content. Contextual links that point to your web page like the one below are good (internal) links, and will positively influence your search performance.” – Ibid

What you may or may not know about contextual links.
“When search engines crawl web pages, they identify links and consider the text around the link.” – Ibid
What are contextual links?
“Contextual links are deep links from your web page content. … Linking to authoritative and well known external resources like Wikipedia (citation) increase the credibility of your content for search engines, since it means that written content is not spam. Instead it is researched based and is relevant to the linked URL.” – Google Search

“The idea is that the link to your website is surrounded by contextual text, relevant content and information that explains where the link is pointing.” – What Are Contextual Backlinks? (& How to Build Them)
Here are some of the biggest benefits that contextual link building can bring your site:
- More traffic — people are more likely to click on a link within useful content
- More visibility — more people will see your brand, name, and website
- More links — others that see you linked in a piece are more likely to link to you as well
- More authority — search engines will give greater page or domain authority to you
- More credibility — people will gain an increased trust in your expertise – Ibid
What’s a relevant backlink?
“The word “relevant” means “closely connected or appropriate to the matter at hand.” In other words, if you earn a link from a web page that addresses a topic similar to the page that the link is pointing to, then it’s relevant.” – How to determine if a link is good or bad – Neil Patel.
What are the ‘bad’ links?
“A bad link is simply one that violates Google’s guidelines. Consequently, it can lead to Google penalties. You should look out for signals when building links, no matter where the links are coming from.
Link farms, paid links, link wheels and other black hat link-building techniques can get you into trouble. Avoid them at all costs.
Most SEOs make the mistake of dropping their links everywhere. They don’t care how this can affect search performance, but you should.
Understand what makes a good link
We’re going to get right into the topic of what makes a good internal link. Listed below are some of the characteristics and signs of a good internal link:
- They drive quality traffic to your site
- The link drives “paying” customers to your site
- The link increase your site’s credibility
- They come from a relevant website
- They come from a trustworthy site – that’s why it’s beneficial to have a link coming from a site with a higher DA score
- They make editorial sense – if visitors are reading your posts they should have an idea of the page they’ll be visiting before they get there
- A good contextual link is not a perfect link – “a perfect link has the ideal anchor text” – I’ll discuss that later
- “A good (internal) link is something you’d want to keep even if links were not a ranking factor – What is a “good” link?
- This is what Neil Patel has to say about what is a good link: “Good links will improve your search rankings and drive targeted organic traffic to your website, while bad links will get you into trouble.” – How to Determine if a Link is Good or Bad – Neil Patel Ubersuggest
- Neil Patel also suggests that “Don’t just throw your web page links anywhere you like. Instead take a more strategic approach.” – How to Determine if a Link is Good or Bad – Neil Patel Ubersuggest
How to earn backlinks?
Natural backlinks are earned – in simpler terms this means that your backlinks are earned naturally when another webmaster likes the content of your website and provides a link to it.
The best place to put your links is in the contents of your page, but don’t put them in the sidebar or the footer where they won’t get as much importance and recognition from search engines.
Finally, I was watching a video from SEO expert Matthew Woodward who suggests to focus on getting links by writing at least two 2,500 word high-quality posts twice a month.
When you look at your links pretend for a moment that that they have nothing to do with determining your ranking factor.
For more details on what makes a good internal link read the post 5 qualities of a good link from Neoreef.com. This methodology “forces’ you to stop thinking about your link as an SEO.
“The second you stop thinking like an SEO it gets much easier.” – What is a “good” link? – StateofDigital.
I might get a little off topic here but if you bear with me and indulge, the information that I’m providing here for website strength circles back to what makes a good link.
Using CanIRank and writing my recent post, (How to find the best keywords for SEO) it’s obvious that I need to improve my website strength and I wanted to know how do you improve your website strength.
In order to answer this question, it’s necessary first to explain, “What is website strength?”
What is website strength?
CanIRank is a backlink generator that I’ve just started using. It’s a good way to get backlinks because it’s the third backlinks software that I use for keyword research and one of the easiest. By adding more keywords to your blog posts the CanIRank software will help with how to increase backlinks for your website.
With CanIRank you can look up keywords that will be helpful for creating backlinks for free. I can’t give CanIRank enough praise because it’s so many things: it’s backlinks website checker, backlink building took, a backlinks tutorial, provides backlinks techniques, and best of all you can get backlinks free if you learn how to use it.
Once you get the idea for how to create backlinks you’ll be rewarded with backlinks from other bloggers called natural backlinks. Backlink building is not a science, it’s an art! – PinArtwork
“It’s undeniable that link building has become an increasingly difficult skill to master, however what I believe is abundantly clear is that link building is no longer a way of tricking the search engines. It’s no longer a dark art in which you can magically make your website appear for unrelated phrases in the search engines. Link building is simply a marketing discipline in which you should try to promote your product, service or content in a place where the people you want to see it CAN see it. If you do this right you will have success in your link building efforts, and perhaps more importantly, success in your overall marketing efforts.” – What Does A Good Link Look Like?
One of the factors that CanIRank uses is website strength and it’s explained as:
“A high website strength mean that many other “important” pages are linking to the website (including the homepage and all other pages). “
A good practice to get into is trying to have 3 – 4 descriptive internal links that point to your other pages (instead of simply providing a direct internal link) and 11 external links that point to authoritative posts.
When I did the review of CanIRank that I just provided earlier it uses six factors to compare your website to its competition.
In that particular post I didn’t elaborate on the meanings of each of those factors which I’m going to provide now. We’ve already seen one of the factors (Website strength) so we don’t need to cover than one again.
Page Relevancy
Does the page use the target keyword, variations, and related terms in key places such as titles, body content, headers, the image alt tags, etc. For a very good post on how to find related terms for keywords please see a post that I wrote on how to get 10,000 views in 3 months. 10,000 new views if you’re a first-time blogger or 10,000 additional views if you’ve already been blogging for a while.
If you’d like to see how your site compares to your competition it’s a two-step process in CanIRank:
- First you need to analyze what you want to rank for and then input the keyword(s). Then click on the “Analyze my Page” button.
- Once that’s been analyzed, click on the orange % in the “optimization field. And then go to the bottom of the page that it brings up. This is one of the best features that I like about the program (see image below).

From this suggestion for how can you better target this keyword I was able to get at least six more related terms that I want to add to the post. It’s not necessary to add each and every related term that’s on the list of related terms.
We’ve looked at related terms that you can use in key places and now we’re going to move on to the next factor called page ext. relevancy.
Page Ext. Relevancy
A high Page External Relevancy score means that many quality websites link to the page using anchor text related to the keyword. A very important ranking factor! For more information about anchor text please read the SEMRush post below that’s called: “What Is Anchor Text? Everything You Need to Know for SEO.”
How do you set up anchor text so it’s related to a keyword?
PinArtwork – Learn to start your blog! Improving the world by helping Pinterest users to start a blog, grow their blog, monetize it, improve their SEO strategy, and providing general information for Pinterest.
The anchor text in the above example is PinArtwork and it points to the homepage, PinArtwork. When setting up your anchor text it should be set up as no-follow (don’t ask me why – it’s just one of those things you must do).
My website, PinArtwork, uses three (3) principal anchor texts:
- PinArtwork
- Ultimate SEO Roadmap to Learning SEO and
- How to find the best keywords for SEO
(examples listed below)
1.PinArtwork – Learn to start your blog! Improving the world by helping Pinterest users to start a blog, grow their blog, monetize it, improve their SEO strategy, and providing general information for Pinterest. (located on my Homepage).
And two more at the bottom of my How to find the best keywords for SEO post
2. “An SEO roadmap is a step-by-step plan for executing your SEO strategy. Think of it like this: the SEO strategy is the “what”and the “why”, whereas the SEO roadmap is the “how”. The two go hand in hand to create a highly actionable set of tasks that have a high likelihood of achieving your SEO goals.” This is truly the most ultimate roadmap that you’ll find to learn SEO with already 300+ incoming links. The Ultimate SEO Roadmap to Learning SEO will aid you in developing your SEO strategy (to develop the “what” and the “why”).
3. The post, How to find the best keywords for SEO describes in detail how to get the most benefit out of CanIRank. “CanIRank is the first SEO software using AI to give you ‘specific’ action recommendations rather than just data. For every recommendation, get detailed DIY instructions or delegate to an SEO consultant with just one click.” I prefer the DIY because it’s free.
Site Ext. Relevancy
Also called Website External Relevancy which a High Website External Relevancy score means that other websites frequently link to this website using anchor text related to the keyword (sounds a lot like the last one that we looked at, I hope I didn’t get them mixed up).
Page Strength
Search engines consider a page to be important when many other important pages link to it. Links from other pages on the same site help too.
In the area of improve my rankings and clicking on the optimize button as I mentioned earlier you’ll be provided with an action plan that could be one or two topics
For example, my two actions plans to improve on are (I’ll provide the recommendations below).
- How can you better target this keyword? And
- What do you need to improve to rank better?
I’m going to take a live example of one of my blog post that I want to improve the keyword for “how to make a tripwire” and I’ll show you the before and after results with using CanIRank.
Before

Note: I haven’t gotten around to actually making the changes to the post with the keyword of how to make a tripwire. I’d like to get this blog post published first and if you come back later I’ll have it done shortly in a few days or so. I like to take the weekend off for blogging. So I’ll probably finish it off on Monday or Tuesday. Plus on Monday or Tuesday I can make some Pinterest pins to promote this post.
I’m also very curious to see what kind of suggestions CanIRank offers me to improve this post. Right now it’s only 2,355 words long and my usual goal is to reach 2,500 words or so. This time around I’m going to have CanIRank give me some suggestions on things I can do that will help increase the number of words as I monkey around with how to get the most out of CanIRank.
After
Here’s a laundry list of the keywords that I plan to add to my post and when you get provided with a list of keywords to use you need to examine your post and use those suggested words naturally as best as you can. Don’t try to stuff too many keywords in there, keep a good flow. (I’m not putting them into bulleted format, that way I can easily copy the targeted keywords into Rank Math).

And one of the suggestions somewhere along the way was to increase the number of words from 5,524 to 5,702 (adding 178 more words). I recollect that I already had a bunch of information within the article but the reason for adding more words is to have the article stand out ahead of your competitors.
Before

After
I almost forgot to mention that it also suggested that I should add a few more occurrences of the target keyword (how to make a tripwire) usage within the post and increase it from 2 upwards. One of the things about Yoast SEO is that it seems liked keyword stuffing because in order to get higher scores you had to repetitively over and over use the same keyword. You might have to play with this feature so that you don’t fall into what is described as the danger zone by over using it.

Earlier I talked about CanIRank uses six factors and here again CanIRank provides an action plan for each of the six factors for “What do you need to improve to rank better?.” For the actions, you click on the actions button to see what it recommends.

I’m very interested in seeing how I can improve this post by using CanIRank but I’ve quickly ran out of my allotted number so I’ve already updated my trial plan so I can have a bigger allotment of keywords to check per day (20 compared to the previous 5). I won’t be able to see the suggestions to improve my rankings unless you’ve provided the page that you’re going to be using (the URL field can’t be blank). Therefore, unfortunately I won’t be able to improve this post until after it’s been published. This is going to be fun to have at least more than 1 ranking post at one time. I can hardly wait.

Don’t get stressed out about link building. Once you start providing great content to your blog post, people will “naturally” start linking to your blog. For example, this blog post, 10 Steps for The Ultimate Roadmap to Learning SEO already has 320 incoming links to it and growing. I hope that if you like this post, you’ll provide a link to this post.
If you do, please add this information (below) to your backlink, and feel free to change it up.
Use 10 Steps for The Ultimate Roadmap to Learning SEO as your SEO guide because many of the items in the Ultimate Roadmap to learning SEO provide links to posts or videos helpful for new bloggers to learn SEO from scratch. And as an extra bonus there’s even a Ultimate Roadmap SEO Checklist that you can copy and paste or subscribe to get it in Word or PDF format.
The topic of how to knowing what makes a good link is so important that I’m taking a 2nd look at the already referenced posts below and I’m looking for content that I might have missed from earlier in the post.
Links that might be construed as bad either now or in the future can impede the ability for your site to rank. Your links that you consider should be good.
2. How to write good link text
Since we’re talking primarily about ‘good’ links what’s an example of a bad link?
Click here for more information … or Don’t overdo the use of ‘read more…’
A trick is ask yourself where does the link lead. Write it so that the link text is concise and accurate.
3. 5 Qualities of a good link we’ve also viewed before but deserves a 2nd look
A very easy way that it’s been suggested to get a backlink is if you see a site and it looks good, send an e-mail, preferably a personalized e-mail. I like to keep my e-mails simple and sign my e-mail with my first name and my website (i.e., Scott | PinArtwork). You’ll find the pipe character “|” located above the enter key on your keyboard or below the backspace key.
PinArtwork: Step 3 of Promote my Content in the post 3 steps to get 10,000 visitors in 3 months provides a suggestion on how to write a personalized e-mail that increases your likelihood of getting a backlink. The first part of that post primarily covers how to do a keyword research.
“When it comes to good links, relevance is always the most important factor.”
4. How to Determine if a Link is Good or Bad by Neil Patel
I normally don’t like to use a bunch of quotes within my posts. After giving it some careful consideration I thought it would be best to directly quote several of Neil’s comments because he’s an SEO expert and I’m an SEO enthusiast. Unless otherwise indicated, the quotes in this area are from How to Determine if a Link is Good or Bad by Neil Patel
“Through personal experience, I’ve discovered that links from SEO, content marketing, and social media sites carry the most weight and impact my rankings.”
“Earning links from sites that have lots of seed sites linking to them will serve you well. Google would view those links as a sign that there must be something useful about your page. Otherwise, why would such trustworthy sites link back to it?”
“If you care at all about SEO, it’s vital to run a backlink analysis of the sites you’d like to get links from.”
When you’re performing a backlink analysis it’s helpful to use a backlink analysis tool. The tool that you decide to use “should” provide you with: keywords, links, and the site authority. PinArtwork: Step 1 of “3 steps to get 10,000 visitors in 3 months” provides primarily how to do a keyword research and how to use Ubersuggest as your backlink analysis tool.
Why should you use link building?
“You can’t ignore link building, because the number of backlinks remains immensely important in organic rankings.”
Get people to follow you by providing long-form content. The whole essence of SEO is give users what they want and you’ll be rewarded by Google with goo ranking.
I was really taken off guard by a comment from Neil Patel regarding the average # of external authority links he uses in his blog posts. “Want to take a guess at how many authority web pages I link out to in my posts on average? Over 40 – all of them relevant and useful. Do people click those links? Sure they do, especially when they links appear natural.”
If you ever decide to write guest posts use a long-form content and “ocus on getting links from long-form content. When you write guest posts, go the extra mile to create longer pieces and then creatively position your anchor link inside the content (contextual link).”
This is something that I personally haven’t gotten around to because I’ve heard pros and cons about disavowing links. But you ‘should’ “Get links from a domain with at least 30% authority. Links from sites with lower scores may be counted as bad.” The rationale behind this methodology can be summed up best in the quote below.
“The more good links you have pointing to your web pages, the better and more authoritative Google will perceive your web pages to be. After all, good links only come to useful sites that users are interested in.
If you find that you’re not getting organic traffic, regardless of the efforts you’re putting into content creation – making sure that you’re providing value – here’s what I advise you to do:
Reach out to authority and industry blogs. Get natural links from trustworthy sites. Most of all, be consistent and patient, and gradually you’ll climb to the top of Google search engine ranking pages (SERPs).”
5. The Anatomy of a Link – What Makes a Good (and Bad) Link?
“One good rule of thumb … is to think whether the page is of value to a real user and whether someone may actually click through to your website from it. If the answer to both of these is no, then it may not be the best link to pursue.”
6. The Beginner’s Guide to Link Building from Ahrefs
Pages that have a higher # of backlinks will tend to rank higher in search results. Links have the ability to push webpages to the top of search results.
Links that are generated from blog comments are usually considered as nofollow. What does this mean to you? It means that the comment that you added in the hopes of getting a backlink doesn’t count as a vote in Google’s eyes. So the advice is that if you’re thinking about leaving a blog comment for the sole purpose of providing your link, don’t do it.
7. Welcome to Hobo link building services
A big part of the E.A.T. process (Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) is the ability to get backlinks on your site. The folks at Hobo link building services have got some good recommendations before you start to endeavor on building your links. First off you should focus on improving your site’s content. Additionally, before you start building links you should focus on any issues that you you might be having in the area of the four pillars of SEO.
PinArtwork: What are the 4 pillars of SEO? You need to use the four pillars of SEO in order to have an effective SEO strategy. “In order to see real results from your SEO campaign, you need to make sure that you have spent sufficient time on each of the pillars of SEO” … “When trying to optimize your content to rank higher within search engine results, you can’t go wrong by focusing on the four pillars of search engine optimization (SEO).
8. Anatomy of a link – what makes a good link?
In this post, you’re reminded why it’s so important to build links:
“In the vast majority of cases, building links … will drastically improve your contents ability to rank for competitive keywords and increase organic traffic.”
None of the pages on your website should ‘typically’ have over 100 links on them. A better thing to do rather than have a whole bunch of other links is to have a “well-placed, prominent link on a page than one in a sea of other links.”
9. What Does A Good Link Look Like?
Yet another good reason for you to build links to your website. I hope that by now you know what makes a good link and the importance of link building:
Your “looking to drive targeted traffic to your website so that you can attempt to convert your visitors into customers. For this reason alone, you should be trying to build links to websites where potential customers are likely to visit.”
What links to my website, PinArtwork?
Throughout this post, I’ve purposely tried to provide you with several contextual links that point to my website. Below I’ve put them collectively into one place.
