Mastering how to do a SEO Cornerstone approach. Today (June 29th, 2021) I was going through the regular routine of checking to ensure that my plug-ins were up-to-date. One of the plug-ins needing an update was Yoast SEO Premium. Now and then, there are minor revision bug fixes such as adding another foreign language. I like to make it a habit to see if there are any major improvements and once again Yoast SEO Premium has stepped up to the plate to make it easier for you to improve your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) with what they are calling a SEO Cornerstone Approach. The latest major version that I’m referring to is version 16.6.
To get started, simply click on the SEO button in your WordPress dashboard and then navigate to Workouts (Premium).
This post covers how to build your SEO with a cornerstone approach using the Yoast SEO premium plug-in. Every step is covered in detail, and this is an easy way to whip your site into shape, especially if you don’t practice regular SEO practices which can be daunting and very challenging.
The six (6) steps are:
- Start: “Choose” your cornerstones!
- “Mark” your articles as cornerstone content.
- Check whether your cornerstone articles are correct.
- Check the number of incoming internal links of your cornerstone articles.
- Add internal links “to” your cornerstone articles.
- Finished! You’ve marked all of the items to improve your website. Following the guidelines in this post you’ve shown to Google the articles that you deem are the most important on your website/blog.
Here are six steps that are in the Yoast SEO Premium version with some short explanations to get your SEO pointed in the right direction using the SEO Cornerstone approach.
Start: “Choose” your cornerstones!
Your site might not feel that SEO fit just yet. But that’s just a matter of time. Let’s start this workout by choosing your cornerstones.
- With which articles do you want to rank highest?
- Which are the most complete?
- Which are the best explainers?
- Which are the most important?
Check out your own website and choose the pages and posts you want to be your cornerstone articles!
“Mark” your articles as cornerstone content.
Check whether your cornerstone articles are correct.
Check whether the articles you’ve marked as cornerstones are the correct ones in this list that is provided. For example, here’s a list of my cornerstone articles.
Check the number of incoming internal links of
your cornerstone articles.
Add internal links “to” your cornerstone articles.
Yoast will always show you the three cornerstone articles which receive the least links on your site and offer suggestions of relevant pages you could link from. At this point, I haven’t yet added the suggested internal links but I’ll be doing it in the near future. I’m just curious to compare the suggested links mentioned below to the internal linking suggestions that I might have already entered earlier (or not).
Go to a related article, find a relevant sentence which is related to your cornerstone article. Insert a text link to your cornerstone in that sentence. Repeat with another related article until your cornerstones have the most internal links pointing towards them.
You’ve marked all of the items to improve your website. Following the guidelines in this post you’ve shown to Google the articles that you deem are the most important on your website/blog.
