In this post, I’m looking for the most prevalent changes to WordPress since it just updated to version 5.8 on or about July 20th, 2021. This post will show you how to use WordPress and some of the new features of version 5.8. I don’t expect to find all of the new features, for all of those “new” features I suggest that you go to the Yoast SEO post called: all these new features in WordPress 5.8.
This post contains affiliate links, I’ll make a commission at no extra cost to you
should you click through and make a purchase.
Update: Since this post was made, WordPress has updated to version 5.9. And now has many more features for users to take advantage of blocks and patterns.
Readily some of the most notably differences for WordPress 5.8, is that it comes with the ability now to add columns and a feature called Query Loop (under the Themes section).
You can arrange columns so that they are all text straight across or you can add columns with text on one side and an image on the other.
An old feature called media and text isn’t as nice as this new layout but it’s a considerable improvement in my opinion because layout looks slightly different.
Just for gee whiz, the first column below is made with a column and below that I’m going to add the media and text layout to see the difference for myself. I prefer the method of using a column to show off one of your images with a comment off to the side over media & text option.
Improve your Domain Authority Score. I don’t like this option because there’s too much white space. I’d have to fill up this entire block in order to use up all of the extra space.
The Good news is now you can add an image with this and then add a link. But it won’t allow adding an affiliate link.
Now here’s the same layout as above with the Media and Text option. The content that you add is centered and by default in the one above the text is at the top of the screen where I’d prefer it – therefore I prefer the layout above. The other thing that I don’t like about the media and text option is the layout pushes your image way too far to the right.
Buttons – I prefer to use images rather than buttons but once in a while, it’d be helpful to have a button or two. With the buttons you can add a link to your favorite post. The “buttons” is the first item located within the design section.
The image below is a result of adding a “site logo” image located in the design section. This will be helpful to quickly add your websites site logo at the top of one of your blog posts or within it somewhere.
Site Title:
The Site Title option displays and allows editing the name of your site. The site title usually appears in the browser title bar, in search results, and more. The “Site Title” feature is in the section Design. Personally, out of force of habit I usually enter my heading after I’ve put in the body of my content and then tweak it using Headline Analyzer so that it’s more clickable. I don’t see any advantage of using this particular button.
Latest Posts
The latest posts (located within the Widgets section) does exactly what it implies: It provides and displays a list of your most recent posts. It doesn’t appear that you can configure how far back to go but my educated guess is that it pulls your most recent 5 blog posts. So that would be helpful to do every now and then to build your website’s site structure. Especially if you’re not using a cornerstone approach like what Yoast SEO premium offers to improve your SEO and site structure.

There are two types of category buttons to use and they’re located in two different places. The first one to show up is “Post Categories” located within the Design Section. The second one to show up is the “Categories” in the Widgets section.

Below is what it will look like for the Post Categories: It display a list of the categories that are assigned to your post.

The Popular Posts feature (below ) isn’t necessary “your” popular posts. It’s popular posts from Monster Insights. If you want to show off your latest popular posts, I suggest using the free plug-in called Jetpack.
Themes
There’s a new section that I don’t recall from earlier versions called Theme. Within that section these are the following items that you can select from:
- Query Loop
- Post Title
- Post Content
- Post Date
- Post Excerpt
- Post Featured Image
- Login/Out
- Posts List
Now we’ll take a look at each of these theme features, show you what each feature can offer, and an example of each of the features.
Query Loop
An advanced block that allows displaying post types based on different query parameters and visual configurations. To the best of my knowledge it pulls up your most recent post. It doesn’t appear that you can select a specific post with this option. More than likely the theme called post excerpt which we’ll come to in a moment, will allow you to pull up a specific post.
The query loop is like a slideshow and at the top of your inserted query loop feature are four features from left to right.
- Two arrows (next pattern) – you can select the option that you like best. There are five options from which you can choose which one you’d like to use and you can toggle back and forth till you find the one that you like.
- In the middle are two rectangles (for the view that you want) called Carousel View and Grid View. The Grid view allows you to change the settings so that you can put the graphics on one side or the other.
- To the far right are two buttons: Start blank and Choose.

I don’t know how this can be of any benefit, because the block cannot be rendered within inside itself. Therefore, I doubt you’ll want to use this feature on a regular basis.

The date for your post gets automatically inserted into your post. If you use dates a lot within your post this can be extremely helpful.
Post Excerpt
I got a notification that there was no post excerpt found. At this point in time, I don’t even know what a post excerpt is. That will come with time.

Post Featured Image
There’s also a button that you need to turn on if you want the link settings to be set to link to that particular post. It appears that the link is turned off by default. So to turn it on, switch the slider to the right. Some of these buttons are nice to have items but I’m old fashioned and prefer to manually upload the images rather than this option. After you’ve clicked the post featured image I’m guessing it pulls your most recent featured image. But there’s a button called Replace for you to replace the featured image with another from your Media Library or upload a new one.

Login/Out
I personally don’t have a need for this option. It allows you to show login and logout links.
Posts List
This feature is very similar to the Query Loop. But it looks a little more extensive with the number of posts to view. One of the features that I really like with this option is that you can customize the number of posts that it will show. I would love to tell you where to find that information but at the moment it’s eluding me. Maybe it only comes with the Query Loop block method. It’s one of those things that we just have to learn how to use by writing blog posts.
