I’m using 14 programs to run an SEO Audit. For the sake of curiosity I want to see how my SEO compares for before and after since I last did my last SEO Audit five months ago in May of 2021.
Right now I’m concentrating spending my efforts during the month of October to focus on optimizing my posts. So after October when all of my posts are published I’ll have a really good feel for the SEO improvement on my website.
What I’ve done for this post is to delete the other two categories that were initially on this post (called 15 SEO Audit Tools sorted by category) and I’m only keeping the tools that are helpful to look at improving your SEO in order to do an SEO Audit.
This post contains affiliate links, I’ll make a commission at no extra cost
to you should you click through and make a purchase.
Before I go into depth on the various SEO audit programs I wanted to share with you two images from my SEO program called Rank Math (before and after screenshots) that substantially helped to improve my site’s SEO. Not only did Rank Math (by itself) help to grow my SEO, much of the success to growing your SEO lies in a prior post that I wrote about improving your site’s SEO called Holisitic SEO wrap up for new bloggers. This was a very pivotal moment that I especially decided to dig deep into improving my site’s SEO.
I wish that I could also share with you the exact before score of my Rank Math’s SEO Analysis screenshot which looks at all your homepage’s SEO score (not your overall optimization). I’m venturing to guess that it was around 75 when I started.
There are two remaining issues that I am still working on. The overall size of my homepage and an issue with CSS code. Both of these are quite extensive for me, especially the one dealing with CSS code which I dabbled with a long time ago when I was using Dreamweaver back in the day.
Below is the screenshot of my current SEO Analysis. If you want to have an idea on how I’ve optimized my posts within Rank Math to achieve this score that I’m exceptionally proud of, please take a look at my post called How to improve your Google ranking with Rank Math.
This is the point that I’ve reached the end of the road for trying to improve my SEO score with Rank Math. It doesn’t mean that I’ve stopped from optimizing the rest of my posts, which is something I’m doing throughout the month of October to get the best possible scores. What it means is that I’ve achieved passing all but two factors on the SEO Analysis page for things that need to get fixed. I truly thought I’d be able to get the one for the size of the homepage but I’m not going to jeopardize getting rid of content just to boost my SEO score on my homepage. Sometimes you have to be reasonable on where you draw the line for where you want to improve SEO. And that’s one of them that I’ve drawn the line in the sand and I’m ready to move on to other issues that I can fix from other SEO programs, other than what Rank Math suggests to fix.
I also feel that it will be helpful for you to see how my traffic has improved since spending the time to devote to improving your SEO which is depicted in the image below from the Jetpack plug-in.
What is a SEO Audit?“
An SEO audit needs to be performed regularly in order for long-term success of your website’s performance. SEO audits are an important, necessary component of keeping your SEO strategy up to date. … Performing an SEO audit will expose errors, enabling you to redirect them and recover lost traffic.” – The Definitive Guide to Running an SEO Website Audit “
You can think of an SEO Audit as an evaluation of a website that grades the site for its ability to appear in search engine results pages (SERPs).
SEO Audits are completed by checking each step on your SEO audit list and finding any issues that need to be repaired or improved to boost your page’s search engine performance.” – Grab Your Free Analysis – Free SEO Audit Report
For my SEO Audit I use all of the tools listed below to find the tasks that need to be evaluated, and prioritized in order to improve your site’s SEO score.
SEO Effectiveness Tools
SEO Effectiveness tool are the programs that take a look at your website to perform a variety of tasks like looking at your page speed and other metrics.
Technical SEO, Content Optimization – Start your free trial with no installation required. By using the free trial you’ll be able to look at all of your pages/posts for the images that don’t have an Alt + Text attribute.
Ensuring all images have a written description is beneficial in the long run. One other principal reason that I like this program is that I personally have run across a few SEO programs that tell me I have too many H1 headings. By going through this program, page by page, you’ll simply be able to look at your headings in a single glance.
I tried rerunning the program again but it requires an email address and I’ve already used up the ones that I like to use.
SEO Tool for website performance – Free- Run a Website Speed Test and get your analysis report for free. Fix issues and improvements that get identified. By reading the Read More notes for each item you can tell exactly how to fix all of the issues that are slowing you down.
May 23rd, 2021
October 9, 2021 – Between now and the end of October I don’t expect to see too much room for improvement because I don’t want to go through the hassle of doing coding with CSS style sheets. What I anticipate is that other than optimizing my posts to get higher SEO scores (with Rank Math) for keywords that I might have reached the end of what I can do to improve my SEO. Hopefully this SEO audit can give me a little more insight into where I can devote my time and attention, provided that it will help to improve my SEO.
In looking at the two images for before and after, my SEO has improved from 70% in May, 2021 to a current total of 81% as of October 9th, 2021. I like the information that this program suggests you take to improve your SEO; however, even with 15 to 16 months experience of blogging much of the information that is suggested to improve my site and issues that should be fixed are so far over my head that I wouldn’t know where to begin (for their suggestions).
The other thing that I noticed is that the second image (with the 4 circles) appears to be representing your site’s page speed factors. I owe a lot of success to this improvement by using the plug-in WP Rocket to boost my site’s page speed, functionality, and performance.
I didn’t see any difference from when I ran this program other than the date was updated. So I didn’t upload the new image which virtually remains the same except for a little less detail in the one below because I’m concentrating on trying to lower the size of the homepage to around what Rank Math suggests around 50K or less. Right now I’m hovering around 70K. I think I’ve actually done better than that but I might be having some caching issues that I’m trying to fix.
I ran a program called SEO Site Checkup (further down the post). Here’s what it had to say about my site’s homepage stats. I thought it wouldn’t be too hard to reduce the size of my webpage’s HTML. But the amount re
To improve my SEO for the next time I do an SEO Audit, I’m heavily looking at using Rank Math for improvement. Since Rank Math’s suggestion is 50K I’m nearly there but I don’t want to delete too much text because I already feel most of the information is needed on the page.
A free SEO Audit Tool for website performance is Google’s PageSpeed Insights. I was extremely pleased after running this program. The score raised from a 10 to a 38 (that was in Oct, 2020). Be sure to specify if you want to see the score for your mobile device or your desktop (located at the top, not visible below). When you run some of the suggestions from other SEO programs, from time to time run this program to use as a benchmark for improvement. Below are my updated scores for mobile and desktop respectively. Today’s (5/30/21) score:
Above are the results from 5/31/2021 and below are the 10/9/2021 SEO Audit results. The first one is the mobile and the other one is the desktop. I was expecting to see a slight decrease because even though WP Rocket is giving me good results, there are a few options that I’m not taking advantage of that have broken my site. Even though they provide better speed, to me it’s not worth having good speed if you can’t see the images. Know what I mean? I’m actually surprised that the numbers are higher than I expected.
|Mobile||5/31/2021 – 65||10/9/2021 – 75 (increased 10%_|
|Desktop||5/31/2021 – 93||10/9/2021 – 97 (increased 4%)|
One of the things that concern me in this SEO Audit and I haven’t spent any time researching it is on the issue of Core Web Vitals as depicted in both images: “Origin Summary – Over the previous 28-day collection period, the aggregate experience of all pages served from this origin does not pass the Core Web Vitals assessment. To view suggestions tailored to each page, analyze individual page URLs.”
GTMetrix is my favorite SEO Audit Tool for website performance – To get an accurate and true picture of your site speed, use GTmetrix. And then read the recommendations provided to give your website a boost. I am very pleased with the performance and structure scores that I got from the report generated on October 9, 2021. I’ve put a lot of effort into trying to reduce the size of my website’s homepage and the results of those efforts are reflected in the report below.
Use Pingdom’s Website Speed Test to help you analyze your website load speed. The test is designed to help make your site faster by identifying what about a webpage is fast, slow, too big, and so on. By itself it’s not a very useful SEO Audit tool to monitor your SEO. However, if you use the other SEO Audit tools in conjunction with this program, you’re very likely to see an improvement in your SEO.
In comparing the two before and after results there was only a slight increase in the performance grade going from 86 to an 88.
This is the notice that I got for the 1st notice of improving page performance regarding compress components with gzip:
“Compression reduces response times by reducing the size of the HTTP response. Gzip is the most popular and effective compression method currently available and generally reduces the response size by about 70%. Approximately 90% of today’s Internet traffic travels through browsers that claim to support gzip.” I have SiteGround and it appears as if gzip isn’t working like it’s supposed to, so that is something I’m going to look into for my settings and discuss with my host provider.
Technical SEO, Content Optimization – Free: Analyzes your website and quickly lets you know if there any issues that need to be fixed. For more detailed information on this awesome SEO Program read my latest post – Introducing a DIY SEO Program to improve your website .
Unfortunately I don’t know where I have the results of this from SEOptimer to show any comparison. Thus far, my advice is to take a screenshot for yourself and post it in a document so that when you do your SEO Site Audit you have a means to check your progress.
What I like about this program is that you can toggle and look at the SEO Recommendations that are categorized into links, On-Page SEO, Social, Performance, or Usability (see Recommendations below at the top of your report).
In this SEO Audit, to pass the Core Web Vitals is something to be concerned about because Core Web Vitals are UI metrics that Google considers important in a visitor’s ‘page experience’ and are a ranking factor. They assess the appearance of content, interactivity of the page and visual stability from the moment of page load. The two items that need attention on my site (indicated by a red X) are legible font sizes and tap target sizing (to improve the mobile aspect of my SEO). I thought that fixing the font size was going to be relatively easy; however, after looking at the details provided I’m going to need to discuss that with my provider so I know where to go to update the CSS code (see below):
There is some text on your page that is small and may not be legible enough for particular users. We recommend reviewing all text on your page in different devices to ensure that it is of appropriate size.
|Font Size||Text Block||Style Location|
|9px||.swp_social_panel .total_shares .swp_label|
SEO Tool with many different suggestions – Free: Highly recommended website to review your SEO score and look for suggestions for improvement. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Use this program in conjunction with SEOptimer (above) to truly optimize your website. Below are the May 30th, 2021 results.
Below are the October 9th, 2021 results. My SEO Scores have changed from 83 to 89 and I have finally been able to get rid of the error that images were missing alt text. I decided to simply change the logo to a text menu and that has fixed the error in my favor.
I like the SEO Site Checkup program because it provides you with six factors to look at your SEO:
|Issues to Fix:||Before||After|
|Common SEO Issues||5||3|
|Server and Security||1||0|
At the top of each of the six factors the program provides you with items that have: failed, warnings, and passed. See the example below at the bottom to the right of Common SEO issues.
One of the errors I’m getting in the Common SEO issues is for a Google Analytics Test – “A Google Analytics script is not detected on this page. While there are several tools available to monitor your site’s visitors and traffic sources, Google Analytics is a free, commonly recommended program to help diagnose potential SEO issues.”
One of the things that I am very glad to see is that my images with missing alt attributes has dwindled down from 32 images to just two images (it appears that it’s one and the same image). I’ve been trying to fix this long standing issue and I’m so close to finishing it; however, the problem lies in the homepage’s theme settings. I’ve found the homepage’s source code but I don’t know where to go to update the information within WordPress and since it’s an SEO issue my host isn’t providing too much assistance to fix this problem other than to recommend that I contact an SEO expert or a developer. Eventually I’ll stumble across something to fix this pesky error that is so close to completion. NOTE: I finally got to the point that I just decided to delete the logo and replaced it with simple text in the menu.

To pass the SEO friendly URL test there are several things listed below. My site is not fairly new and it’s ranked well so I’m leaving this one quite alone. Especially because I have a lot of Pinterest pins. Changing the URL would affect those pins.
– In order for URLs to be SEO friendly, they should be clearly named for what they are and contain no spaces, underscores or other characters. You should avoid the use of parameters when possible, as they are make URLs less inviting for users to click or share.
– If your website is new and is not indexed by search engines you can replace underscores with hyphens or redirect those links to URLs that use hyphens.BUT, if your website is ranked well by search engines you do not need to do this (probably you have other ranking factors working very well).
– The general advice remains: build links that contain hyphens rather than underscores and avoid dynamic URLs.
This is a fair program; however, it takes a considerably long time to load all of it’s results (several minutes or so). The first time that I saw this program I thought it was very terrific. However, now that I’ve compared it to other SEO programs, I’d suggest using some of the other SEO programs over this one.
Now, here’s the latest results as of October 9, 2021. My Domain Authority (DA) is fluctuating between 7 and 8 and the Page Authority (PA) has increased from 13 to 23.
This is the information I got from the general overview: “There are some problems on your page. The page analysis score is 80.5%. Aspects SEO, Accessibility are rather well optimized. In particular, you should work on the Performance Aspects.” Unfortunately I didn’t have anything to compare it to. Therefore, I strongly suggest that while you’re building your site’s SEO to make yourself an occasional copy so you can see your progress.
- The page weight is too high.
The page weight is too high – 65.9 KB to download to get your HTML page. So concentrating on my site’s homepage is something that is achievable. I just need to figure out what I’m going to get rid of to reduce the size as suggested.
SEO Tool – Also has a 7-day Free Trial (credit card is required). I was very impressed with this SEO-friendly program. I liked the fact that some of my pages were “automatically” optimized. This is a program I’m going to invest some time and money into trying as one of my very first SEO programs. One of the main reasons is that it suggested a 7-week program to help me build my SEO over the course of 7 weeks. So I’m going to give it a shot and hope for the best. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Below are the results from October 9th, 2021. My On-Page SEO Score has increased from 84 to 87. The number of keywords has tremendously increased from 3 to 360. I had created some posts with FAQs and I had the same meta description for each of the FAQ categories so that that was an easy fix that shouldn’t show up anymore.
I had several items that were being blocked from appearing in search engines. Most of the links are ones that I don’t even recognize so for me it’s a low priority and I’ve set the parameters to disregard this pages.
Several of my files (82) are taking a long time to load. This is the message that I’m getting for that SEO issue:
“The load time of a website refers to the time that it takes for the entire site to render in your browser, displaying all parts of the site’s HTML code. This does not include images, CSS, Java, or any other non-HTML codes. Never has it been more important for your site’s load time to happen quickly. If you want your content to rank, it’s vital that your site loads quickly. The faster the better.”
I’ve been contemplating to upgrade my site to CDN so this might help in that endeavor. If you decide to use a CDN make sure to backup your site first. Hopefully, this will help get rid of that error and improve the load time. My main concern about the CDN is will my images be intact. I’m going to look at Facebook for some suggestions before I actually update to CDN.
Lastly, I had 12 pages that were reflecting that they didnt’ have a H1 heading. Most of them are from the FAQ plug-in so I’ve ignored those files.
SEO Tool – Free: Grades your website in seconds to let you know what needs to be improved. Has a 14-day Trial period with no credit card required.
I don’t recollect when this was taken but I’d venture to guess this was in May 2021. The overall SEO Score changed from 77 to 85 (on October 9, 2021).
Performance: For performance there’s been a change in my SEO that changed from 17 to 30.
SEO: There’s been a slight drop in the SEO going from 30/30 to 25 out of 30. This drop is because just one of my images has no alt text description. I know what needs to be done, the problem is that what I’m doing to try and fix the problem isn’t showing up in my results. I can’t wait to get this one image repaired. So that this error no longer shows up in SEO reports.
Mobile: There’s been no change at all in Mobile which remains at 20 out of 30. I have no idea how to fix this and it’s going to take some time to fix this issue. The error I’m getting is this:
“Tap Targets – Where do I click? Mobile-friendly pages perform better in search results. Make sure interactive elements like buttons and links are not too small or too close together.” I’ve put tap targets in bold faced so that I can do some homework to figure out what I need to do, in order to pass this test. Because at the present moment I don’t even know where to start and what needs my attention (which obviously appears to be some links that are too close together somewhere.
Security: Remains a constant 10 out of 10.
- Provides Google Page Speed, which is a strong SEO ranking signal.
- Lists your top 10 keywords as seen by SEMRush.
- Presence of many technical aspects, such as sitemap.xml and robots.txt files.
- Check your metadata and images for missing information.
- Presence of social links on your site…and so much more!
- Best of all, this SEO Audit is completely FREE, and you can download a non-branded PDF!
I’m guessing that the info below is from May 2021.
The image below represents my site as of October 9th, 2021.
